The Dead Tour Tickets. Why Not Grateful?

January 9, 2009

The Dead tickets back on sale should send Hippies into delirium, surely? But why not “Grateful”? You might well ask.

The Dead announced that they’d abandoned the “Grateful” part of the name after the 1995 death of frontman Jerry Garcia. Garcia was often described as the “leader” of the Grateful Dead, but in an early-70s Rolling Stone interview he famously retorted, “I’m not the leader of the Grateful Dead or anything like that; there isn’t any f****n’ leader!”

The changing the band’s name didn’t go without resistance. Dead guitarist Bob Weir said of the change, “At least a couple of the guys really wanted to do it. I think it’s a bit premature. I was just fine being the Other One. If they really want to do it, they’re going to — I’m clearly out-voted on this.”

One thing is for sure, all members of the Dead are thrilled to be together as a group again and this tour is set to amaze, as ever.
